The contractual status of the selected candidate will be under the 200 series of the UN Staff Rules which were established for the management of Project

Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Court Management Section and, as a member of the Translation Pool, the incumbent will perform the following duties: Screen documents written in Khmer language and advise the Investigators/Prosecutors of their content with a view of relevance for full translation; Translate a variety of texts from Khmer language into English and/or French and vice versa. This includes public and top confidential documents, statements, audio/video materials, requested by theOffice of the Co-Investigating Judges and Office of the Co-Prosecutors; Draws up summaries of documents, statements, articles and books as and when required; Provide interpretation, if qualified, upon requests; Perform
other duties as and when required.
Competencies
Professionalism - Sound knowledge of the historical background of the Khmer Rouge Trial and excellent translation skills with emphasis in legal and political text. Judgment and decision making - Ability to take initiative in making appropriate judgment and decision in working with documents of large quantities and complex nature, especially when encountered by situations which are not covered fully by the existing guidelines. Teamwork
- Ability to work harmoniously with people of multi-ethnic and cultural background with respect for diversity. Communication - Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in languages, translation, or other fields. A first level university degree with a relevant combination or academic qualifications and experience may be accepted n lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
At least 6 years of experience in translation, preferably in an international organization. Experience in interpretation is an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, excellent written and verbal knowledge of English and Khmer is essential and must pass a translation test. Knowledge of French is an advantage.
Other Skills
Fully conversant with the use of computer software applications i.e. e. MS word, information databases, Internet/intranet services and library sources, etc.
